We’re building a new learning platform that combines tech, gaming and community. You’ll complete learning quests with other students; level up real skills aligned to the SACE framework; and do it all totally online. We’ll even provide you with a laptop if you need one.
FLEXIBLE LEARNING
XR_ is self-paced, with you deciding when and how you study. Want to push yourself to level up? Side Quests will open up options for gaining XP in game design, digital art, coding and other tech skills that interest you.
YOUR DIRECTION, SET BY YOU
Focus on learning things you care about. XR_ students drive the direction: our teachers will work with you to set a path based on the things you want to learn. We’ll also bring in working professionals to talk about their skills and real world experiences.
SUPPORT & CONNECTION
Keep your health bar full with regular check-ins and adaptive support created for neurodivergent, anxious, or just different learners. (We can also help with housing, health referrals, and finance stuff.)
IN A SMALL TOWN… OR YOUR SCHOOL NOT REALLY DOING “TECH” RIGHT?
We like woodwork as much as the next learning platform, but we know the offerings might be slim where you are. If you’d rather learn Unity, Photoshop or Figma instead of how to use a bandsaw or sewing machine, we get it.
the XR_PLATFORM
The XR_ Learning Platform kind of looks and feels like a game, but the learning is real.
Complete Quests solo or in small teams, covering topics including Game Design, Visual Art and Coding.
Got other interests in the digital and tech space? We’ll support you to identify and follow your own goals.
XR_ is completely free for students. There are no fees, no hidden costs, and no equipment charges. How is this possible? Youth Inc. is a fully-registered Independent senior school that receives government funding to support young people who are disengaged from education. Unlike other Independent schools, however, Youth Inc. does NOT charge any school or tuition fees to make sure cost is never a barrier to getting back on track.
What does a typical week look like?
Each day has a different focus. Monday and Tuesday are typically for group (Guild) project work, known as Campaigns. Wednesday is a self-directed day for independent progress. Thursday is for individual project work (Solo Quests). Friday is a wellbeing and rest day (students are not required to be online), when students can spend their time doing what they need to.
How long does the program run?
The full program is two years. Year 1 runs across four 10-week terms with more staff support. Year 2 runs across two 20-week semesters with greater student independence. Some students may take longer depending on their goals and pace, and that’s okay; the model is designed to flex.
When can I enrol?
New cohorts start twice a year; in Term 1 (February) and Term 3 (July). If you’re interested, complete an Expression of Interest (EOI) and one of our staff will make contact with you to discuss next steps.
What about grades?
XR_ doesn’t use grades. Whilst we assess within SACE (just like most schools) you won’t receive an A-E report card. Your work speaks for itself, and your true test is how it is received by the audience. Instead, you track your progress through the growth of your traits and stats, the capabilities that XR_ embeds within the project work. Traits are the five broad categories: Fellowship, Agency, Honour, Wisdom, and Stamina. Within each Trait are specific Stats (things like Creativity, Perseverance, Collaboration, and Reflection). Students develop these traits through the Campaigns and Quests and use them to promote themselves for future opportunities, like job interviews.
Do I need prior experience with tech or gaming?
No. Students don’t need any specific background. XR_ is designed for people at all experience levels. The program meets students where they are and builds from there.
